Relatos visuales de una "arica chilena". los magazines de la editorial zig-zag (1902-1930)

In this article the process of incorporation of the city of Arica to the Chilean national sovereignty is discussed, focusing our attention on the graphic reports on the process that made the Zig-Zag Publishing, through its magazines Events and Zig-Zag, during the first decades of the twentieth century. We argue that these publications were important cultural artifacts through which the population of south-central Chile, could meet the set of institutional and social strategies used to achieve the full integration of the city of Arica to national sovereignty, under tensions features postwar Pacific, through the circulation of a series of stereotypical representations of the process, based on the nationalist and modernizing imagination that characterized the period studied. In this sense, we propose that visual stories of the magazine Zig-Zag, appealing to the supposed objectivity of photography, were an efficient vehicle for his State and the elite around the process of incorporation of the territories that constitute in the new northern Chile border, and contributed to shaping the image of a city within a discursive level country it was conceived as homogeneous, orderly, civilized and aimed towards progress.
