Resumen
This article analyses the relationship between socio-economic origin, educational achievement and occupational situation (social mobility) for youth in Chile. Descriptive statistics, logarithmic models and the "Odds Ratio" technique were used as methodological approaches. As the primary information source, a survey was applied to 800 people between thirty and thirty-five years old in greater urban Santiago, where one third of the total population lives. Secondary data came from a national household survey (CASEN, 2003). Results showed that in terms of absolute mobility, there is a higher correspondence between parents and children with higher education. On the other hand, the study identified an important component for absolute intergenerational social mobility associated directly with occupational mobility. In relation to relative mobility, there is a high probability that someone coming from a blue collar family can move up to a higher social status.
