Resumen
The text addresses the historical evolution of the university and its relevance as one of the most influential institutions of Western civilization. The central aim is to provide a reflective interpretation of this trajectory, offering tools to understand the future challenges that these organizations face in the context of debates on the idea of the university. The methodology employed consists of documentary research that analyzes academic articles and historical documents related to the genesis, development, and transformation of universities over time. A critical review is carried out of bibliographical sources that explore the role of the church, the state, and social processes in the configuration of these institutions. The main findings highlight that universities were born as ecclesiastical corporations in the Middle Ages, but over time evolved into autonomous entities that actively participated in the formation of political, scientific, and cultural elites. From the Renaissance and the Enlightenment onward, the university became increasingly secularized and integrated into the development of nation-states, becoming a fundamental pillar of knowledge and innovation. In the contemporary era, universities face new challenges arising from globalization, the massification of higher education, and the growing need for connections with the productive sector and the market. The text concludes that, although the university has lost its strictly state character, it continues to be a key space for the production of public goods and knowledge, adapting its core idea to social and economic changes.
