Resumen
This article analyzes the space occupation by indigenous populations in the Lluta Valley (Northern Chile) and how they were displaced from their lands by Spanish landlords, who introduced new crops such as alfalfa in addition to black slave labor. The local ethnic groups were thus forced to retreat towards the 'pre-cordillera'. Nevertheless, the traditional maize crop shaped the territory of the coastal valleys, while also producing a robust regional economy sustained by diverse groups during the colonial period.
