Resumen
This article proposes a psychoanalytic interpretation of the myth of Azapa’s bride from the city of Arica in northern Chile. The interpretation has been sustained after establishing the text of the myth from bibliographic and documentary sources (press) that have been complemented by in-depth interviews with two key informants related to the historical character who starred in the events from which the fiction arises: Gloria Barrios Rivera, who died in October 1956. It is revealed that the myth about the ghostly appearances of a bride, is related to the social structures that fully regulated and that today partially regulate marriage and the position of the female sex in the society of Arica in the second half of the twentieth century. Likewise, the interpretation that is exposed evidences how in the myth own elements and relative to female sexuality are conjugated, as has been theorized from Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis. It concludes by posing the question about the links between femininity and the social function of the marriage bond.
