N2 - This article studies, through a historiographic analysis of press sources, official documents, both private and public, and specialized literature, the process of loss of the nitrate property of Tarapacá at the hands of its original discoverers and promoters, to be transferred to the enabling companies that generally came from central European countries in the second half of the 19th century. In short, by 1878, practically most of the original families of Tarapacá, owners of nitrate offices, had sold them, where not only the loss of economic and political power of the local nitrate entrepreneurs concerning foreign enabling companies is remarked, but rather the consolidation of international capitalism in a peripheral region. This phenomenon is analyzed as an invasion-succession process.
