Resumen

Research is conceived as a fundamental activity in the development of the territories, therefore, studies that address research systems become a strategic factor to fulfill the university’s institutional mission. The objective of this paper is to analyze the strategies developed by the Universidad de Tarapacá in Chile to promote scientific production, in order to generate information to improve decisions in this relevant function. The methodology used is qualitative, collecting data from documentary review and interviews to authorities linked to the research; it is a descriptive research that uses secondary and primary sources of information. The results reveal the existence of three types of incentives (temporary, economic and hierarchical) and internal competitions to finance research projects. According to those interviewed, the strategies promote the approach of teachers to research processes, but present limitations due to the conditions and development capabilities of novice researchers, given the demands of high-impact research.
