Resumen
This work focuses on the study of institutions and forms of social control. It also seeks to make a brief analysis of the operation of the prison system existing in the northern extreme of Chile (1895-1910), understanding the penitentiaries as places where State, violence, power, punishment and fear converge, as historical phenomena. The methodological approach mainly involves a bibliographic and archival search and analysis, with the purpose of presenting a background to the situation in prisons and their particularities in a border region, as is the space of the north end, of recent incorporation to the Chilean administration. Predominantly qualitative research strategies (analysis of texts) have been privileged, giving priority to the description and analysis of the sources.
