Resumen
During the Chilean occupation, the sierra of Arica was witness to the emergence of local leaders, in a dynamic and active way, operating between the Chilean state and community. By occupying an "intermediate" space they were able to build their own identities and become interstitial, resisting the Chilean domination in their everyday lives and openly expressing their "Peruvian identities". Through multiple and seemingly contradictory discourses, they acted in political practice as "hinges" between the two nationalities, reorienting themselves in front of the new Chilean authority. Such was the case of Antonio Mollo, the actor studied in this article.
