N2 - Hydrogen generation through water electrolysis has been gaining attention, with hydrogen being a promising fuel and energy source for the future. Despite the advantages and benefits, the slower pace of both oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER) acts as a limiting factor toward the extensive use of water electrolysis. This chapter attempts to throw light on the recent advancements in the technique with due reference to the novelty in synthesis of different electrocatalysts. Discussions are presented with respect to the characterization and structural advantages of the different catalysts deployed. Electrochemical treatment techniques are identified as the most promising toward wastewater treatment owing to their robustness, flexibility, and ease of operation over a wide range of inorganic and organic contaminants. Emphasis is given to the different electrochemical methods used and the various studies done in this regard.
