Resumen
Traditionally, the study of border areas has been approached from the viewpoint of international relations, with emphasis on the analysis of the prominent role of the State, a strong determinant of the main actions in political, social, cultural, economic, educational fields, etc. This article presents a vision on the new conceptualizations regarding border areas, which constitute possible topics to be approached from the analytical anchors of regional history. Considering the border areas of Northern Chile as an example, we could define them as an object of study, with their own peculiarities that need to be to understood stemming from the regional history.
