Resumen
The objective of this article is to analyze the ways in which Chilean firms compete, based on the identification of the competitive strategies adopted by organizations of different firm sizes and industrial sectors. This quantitative study uses the fourth Longitudinal Business Survey conducted in 2015 by the National Institute of Statistics of Chile and applies descriptive analysis and multiple correspondence analysis to a sample of 4,828 firms, using SPSS. The results show that 64.97% of firms follow a differentiation strategy, while 28.74% adopt a hybrid strategy, with cost leadership being the least frequently used strategy. In ad dition, a diversity of competitive strategies is observed according to firm size and industrial sector. In particular, competitive strategies corresponding to 13 activity sectors and four firm sizes present in Chile are identified, and it is further demonstrated that these competitive strategies are not mutually exclusive. In conclusion, this research provides guidance to firms and institutions regarding the competitive landscape of Chile, with potential usefulness for Latin America and for the formulation of business-related policies, as well as for investors interested in the region and in emerging economies.
