Abstract

Conducting polymers (CPs) are cost-effective and lightweight and offer tunable electrical, optical, and mechanical properties that outperform conventional materials. Their areas of synthesis, fabrication, and high environmental stability make them highly attractive for several applications. CPs exhibit strongly reversible redox behaviors, combining desirable features of plastics and metals and allowing for versatile use across multiple fields. CPs are widely applied in sensing technologies, including air quality monitoring, gas sensing, and the detection of hazardous chemicals in the environment. In biosensing, CP-based devices study biological materials such as proteins and DNA, with applications spanning medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring. Advances in nanotechnology have enhanced CP nanomaterials, improving their performance in electronics, optoelectronics, sensing, and energy devices. Surface modifications can introduce physicochemical and biological cues, promoting cell adhesion at the polymer-tissue interface, making CPs ideal for biomedical applications. To be suitable for various technologies, CPs must overcome limitations like poor mechanical properties and instability, which are addressed through tuning. They allow the flexible tuning of structures and electrical properties while maintaining durability and are solution-processable for the large-scale production of flexible devices. This chapter discusses the tailoring of CPs for specific applications, focusing on their role in environmental, biomedical, and energy-related fields.
