Abstract
This paper presents the results of systematic surveys conducted along the coast and lower reaches of the Vítor Ravine and the Camarones Valley. These data, combined with existing information from the Arica coast and the Lluta and Azapa valleys, demonstrate that painting was not a common technique for rock art production in these sectors of the Western Valleys in far northern Chile, as only seven such sites have been recorded. Despite the scarcity of rock paintings in the study area, we provide a quantitative and qualitative characterization regarding their form, technique, and iconography. Finally, the results of this characterization are discussed and supplemented with information derived from associated archaeological deposits.
