Abstract

This study investigated the relation of personality with the dynamic emergence of leadership in self-managed teams made up of students. We propose a relationship between Extroversion, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness with the emergence of task-oriented leadership and relationship-oriented leader (designated as leader by others) and follower (consider others as leader) emergence. The sample consisted of 73 students from a Chilean university who participated in a team project during 12 weeks, characterized by interconnected tasks and responsibilities. Results indicate that individuals with high levels of Extroversion and Agreeableness received more nominations as relationship oriented leaders, while individuals with high levels of Conscientiousness and Extroversion received more nominations as task oriented leaders. As for follower emergence, it was found that individuals with high levels of Conscientiousness and Agreeableness were more likely to send task nominations. Findings are discussed.
