Abstract
The production of Λ and K0s has been studied in 200 GeV/nucleon p+S and S+S collisions in the continuous flux chamber of the NA35 experiment at CERN's SPS. A significant increase in the multiplicities of all observed strange particles relative to negative hadrons was observed in the core S+S collisions, compared to the top+p and p+S collisions. These latter collisions do not show an overall (relative) increase in strangeness above p+p, but the rapidity distributions and hadronic multiplicities indicate some secondary cascade production of Λ particles in the p+S and p+Au collisions. The Λ polarization in the core S+S collisions was determined to be compatible with zero at top T = 2 GeV/c.
