Abstract
Through a meticulous study of aspiration, a device is designed, constructed, and used to study the mechanics of breathing, aimed at answering the question: what causes inhalation? A model of the rib cage was produced that shows the increase and decrease in its volume due to the simple contraction and relaxation of a group of muscles, producing geometric variations that induce airflow. This demonstrates that the most widely used model, in which the displacement of a membrane attached to a rigid-walled container induces the expansion of one or two balloons representing the lungs, contributes to a misconception about air inhalation.
