Abstract
Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is an enveloped DNA virus that belongs to the gamma Her-pesviridae family. The virus establishes a latent/lytic persistent infection, though it can be involved in cancer development in some subjects. Indeed, evidence supports an etiological role of EBV in undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a subset of gastric carcinomas and lymphomas. Additionally, EBV has been detected in breast carcinomas (BCs) although its role has not been estab-lished. In this review, we summarize epidemiological information regarding the presence of EBV in BC and we propose mechanistic models. However, additional epidemiological and experimental evidence is warranted to confirm these models.
