The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established on August 29, 1968 as part of the Technological Institute of the University of the North, in collaboration with governments and international organizations.
The University of Tarapacá in Arica (UTA) is the legal successor of the University of the North and the Professional Institute of Arica. In 1981, UTA was created, and the Faculty of Engineering was established, which includes the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 2006, the University School of Engineering of UTA was created according to Decree No. 7/2006.
