The Department of Physics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Tarapaca was established in 1982 through the merger of the Physics departments of the Universidad Católica del Norte and the Universidad de Chile, both located in Arica.

The Department of Physics carries out its teaching activities primarily through the Pedagogy in Physics and Mathematics program. It also provides services to programs in the fields of health sciences, engineering, education, agronomy, and sciences. The department is equipped with 5 Teaching laboratories, a storage room, a demonstration room, and 3 Research laboratories.
